7. Was magst du lieber?

Was würdest du tun?

11. Eine gute Fee will dir drei Wünsche erfüllen, was würdest du dir wünschen?

Lies auf Deutsch

As a special something for the Fairy Tale Summer I’ve decided to ask the Märchenspinnerinnen a few questions about their adaptations and Fairy Tales.

And here we are with the first one:

Sylvia Rieß – Authoress of the Axolotlking

A few things about you:

I was born and raised in the Lahntal. One of the most beautiful places in Germany (even according to the travel guide by LonelyPlanet 😉 ). In my youth I was free as Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter and I most definitely inherited my love for nature from my parents, but certainly also my love for books and stories.

My Mama herself is an absolute bookworm and I always helped myself to the contents of her book shelves. And my Papa used to write short stories for us, way back in the day when he was at sea.

Through this it was sealed at age 4 what I wanted to become. Vet AND Writer. I was smiled at and they always said: Well, she’ll change her mind eventually. But if I’m one thing, that’s stubborn. 😉

Thus I completed my degree in 2012 and with the first volume of my Fantasy-Trilogy „Der Stern von Erui“ [N.B. „Song of a falling Star“, which is in the process of being translated into English] I laid the foundation in 2015 that I actually am both today.

And I enjoy being both. 🙂

Beforehand a few Questions regarding your book „The Axolotlking“ and the Märchenspinnerei:

1. Which element of your Fairy Tale was the hardest to transfer?

The hardest. Boah…good question. The transformation drove me crazy for quite a while. I mean, I knew that Fynn needed to become an Axolotl. For several reasons. Though such a critter is aquatic. Therefore it can’t just hop on land like the Frog and approach the Princess.

Getting him and Leo onto the same ‚Wavelength‘ was really difficult. For a long time I feared he would be to passive. However, reactions to certain parts show me that I think I’ve solved it not too badly. 😉

2. What reduced you most to despair working on your Fairy Tale?

The problem above was one of them. But the second was Poison. This character who somehow plays a role in Leos Online-existance didn’t tell me for quite a while what role they played in life outside the WWW. At some point it was clear. Then I asked myself: Boah! Is this too intense?

On the other hand…you do experiences weird things, when you stroll around in internet forums as a teeny – I can tell you a thing or two about it.

3. Which Version (Movie, Tale, Adaptation) of your story, except your own, do you like most?

I consider the Märchenperlen by ARD and ZDF [N.B. Märchenperlen and Sechs auf einen Streich are new Fairy Tale interpretations by German public channels ZDF and ARD, respectively] really well made. Even the one of the Frog King. But in general ab I, when it comes to Fairy Tales, not at all picky. With Fantasy novels I absolutely don’t like glitter and kitsch and here ballgowns and there princes. But Fairy Tale film adaptations of any kind totally appeal to the little girl in me. ^^

4. A Movie-Person comes to you and wants to turn your Fairy Tale into a movie, whom do you see in the leading roles?

That is difficult, as the two, who would fit for Leo and Fynn, grew up by now. I would go for young, still unown talents. But Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga would definitely have been my dream cast in their teeny years.

For Taissa do I have to add that the ‚Beauty-Police‘ in our Forum once rapped on my knuckles and told me that she was too pretty for Leo. Although it’s never said in the book that Leonie is ugly. She’s a bit boring and not at all hip. Most girls her age perceive themselves as ugly. I have to honestly say that I can’t detect a single ugly girl on pictures of my old clas. 🙂 Everyone is beautiful in their own way. And that is another message in the book that is close to my heart.

5. What’s your wish for the future of the Märchenspinnerei?

Many hooked readers for all the books. For this I couldn’t care less about who like which book best in the end. We have such a manifold mixture that I think there will be something for every taste. No matter if your 12 or 82.
I also wish that our great teamwork continues to grow the way it did up today. Time and again you hear from authors who say: Never again joint project. To say that we don’t have areas of conflict, would be a lie. But so far I don’t regret significantly shaping this project. I’m happy about every new book, just as if it was my own. 😀

Let’s take a closer look at your passion for Fairy Tale …

6. What is your loveliest memory regarding Fairy Tales?

My loveliest Fairy Tale Memory … Hm … no. I celebrated my weeding in an old castle. 🙂 That was magical too.

7. What do you prefer? Happy End or Bad End?

I personally love a well made Happy End. My sense for justice and my inner desire for harmony just wants that the world in my stories isn’t wretched and messed up. The good guys are rewarded and the bad guys get punished. But please not too corny or with too much of a sugar coat. 😉  Although I can take pleasure in Bad Endings. Sometimes it just appeals to you. So in principle, I know, dumb saying: It depends on the story.

8. What bothers/enthuses you the most about Fairy Tales?

In the originals not that much. With some adaptation that it’s only about that prince searching for princess and ball gown hullabaloo. Fairy Tales always want more. Have a deeper message.

9. What is typically for a Fairy Tale for you?

That I’m fascinated and enthused in the end, but also that I took something from it.

At the End a few fantastical Questions:

10. You meet a talking animal, that makes you believe they’re an enchanted human. What would you do?

Not being surprised and trying to help them. After writing I’ve so far always met persons who are similar to the characters in my books. As I already have two stories where people are turned into animals, would it be consistent by destiny, if I’d have to release someone in reality. 😉

11. A Fairy Godmother wants to grand you three wishes, what would you wish for?

I wish for the gift to heal. I wish for the strength to be there for others when they need me. And I wish to reach hearts and souls with my words, to maybe make one or the other difference in the world through this.

12. Which Fairy Tale way would you choose to get rid of someone?

Change them with the power of love, so they can see their own mistakes. (Boah!!! That sounds kitschy. But yes, if I had the choice, I would prefer to solve conflicts without violence.)

13. Bonusquestion: With which Fairy Tale character would you like to trade places?

I think none. I love my life the way it is. 🙂
